Pregnant?

Congratulations. Pilates is for you. Whether maintaining fitness through pregnancy or regaining your figure and rediscovering your pelvic floor after your baby is born, Pilates can help.

But the first thing to do is confirm with your doctor or midwife that it is safe for you to do Pilates, as there are a few circumstances in which it is not advised.

Pregnant and Experienced

If you have done Pilates before your body will probably be in good shape for the challenges of pregnancy, labour and child care and it is usually safe for you to continue BUT there are a few changes you must make to your programme to stay safe. One to one sessions will help guide you through the different stages of pregnancy, the "dos and don'ts" of general exercise and safest way the Pilates method should be be adapted for you. It may be suitable for you to attend a mixed ability class with a modified programme to suit your needs. Not all Pilates exercises are appropriate or even possible when you are pregnant and there are moves and positions your should definitely not be doing. So the first thing you should do is book a 45 minute private session in your own home to discuss the safest way to proceed. You may then choose to continue your 1 - 1 sessions, meaning the exercises are ideal for you, or choose to join a mixed ability class, understanding that moves will need to be modified.

         New to Pilates

Now is a great time to start, as long as you have checked with your doctor that it is safe to do so. It is generally advised that you do not start any new form of exercise within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy as a precaution but after that Pilates can help you focus on your strength, pelvic floor and posture.  By building strength from within, Pilates can help you adjust to the constant changes of your body throughout pregnancy. Pelvic floor conditioning, back strengthening, postural awareness and all over body toning are just some of the benefits Pilates can bring to your pregnancy. The first thing to do is make an appointment for a 1 -1 consultation in your own home, as everyone is different and the Pilates technique will need to be adapted to suit your specific needs.
